3 hikers rescued after 2 heat-related incidents at same Scottsdale mountain
SCOTTSDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — Fire crews have rescued three hikers following two separate heat-related calls at the same mountain in Scottsdale on Friday.
The first rescue at Pinnacle Peak Park happened around 11:15 a.m. when technical rescue teams from Scottsdale, Phoenix and Glendale were dispatched to help two hikers on the trail. Scottsdale Fire officials say the hikers, aged 53 and 61, were both experiencing dehydration, weakness and general illness.
Both were later helped down to the base of the trail.
Before leaving the first call, technical rescue teams were notified of a third hiker at the same mountain who was reportedly overcome by heat shortly after 12 p.m. Rescuers used a “big wheel operation,” a modified stretcher with a single large wheel with an offroad tire to bring the woman to safety.
The conditions of the three hikers are currently unknown.
A First Alert Weather Day has been declared, as temperatures around the Valley are expected to reach 102 degrees on Friday and hit triple digits for a third day in a row on Saturday. See the latest forecast here.
The Scottsdale Fire Department reminds hikers to hydrate the night before and throughout their hike, especially as temperatures rise across the Valley. Hikers are also urged to turn back once they’ve consumed half their water supply.
