PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Arizona has some breezy days in the forecast into the weekend.

As it turns out, we are heading into a very breezy time of the year. The month of April tends to be the windiest month for many Arizona locations, including Flagstaff, Show Low and Tucson.

Here are the top five windiest months in Flagstaff, using data from Iowa State University’s Environmental Mesonet.

Notice that in Flagstaff, May is ranked second and March is third. This makes sense as spring tends to be a transition season when cool and warm air collide, leading to fronts and air pressure differences.

What about Show Low? While Show Low is, on average, windier than Flagstaff, it has the same monthly top five wind ranking.

Many data sources show that in Phoenix, April is also the windiest month. However, Iowa State Mesonet data going back to 1948 show that July is actually the windiest month, May is the second windiest, and April comes in third place.

Why July?

It’s probably partly due to high-country monsoon storms. Even when the rain does not make it into the Valley during monsoon thunderstorms, we often get the gusty outflow winds.

No matter how we slice the data, we know that April tends to be breezy. If you have allergies, now would be a good time to make sure you are up-to-date on your allergy defense strategy.
