Likely record set for “warmest low temperature” for Phoenix area on Wednesday
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — It was a very mild morning for people heading to work in the Valley on Wednesday morning. It was so mild that a new record was likely set for the “warmest low temperature” in Phoenix.
The current (and likely soon-to-fall) record for the warmest temperature on this date is 66 degrees, set on March 26, 1990. As of Wednesday morning, the lowest temperature dip was 70 degrees! The only way a new record would NOT be set is if the temperature dipped to 66 or lower before midnight, which is extremely unlikely.
We focus a lot on high temperature records, but “warm low” temperature records are important, too. Many people are gone during the day but home most of the night, so a warm night may lead to higher air conditioning costs than a warm day.
In addition, for vulnerable populations that don’t have access to air conditioning, a warm night can make trying to sleep very uncomfortable or even dangerous. This does not apply much to last night because a low of 70 is not that extreme, but it does apply to those hot summer nights when the temperature sometimes does not drop below 90.
Fortunately, a cooling trend is on the way to end the week and start the weekend, but we know that as we get closer to summer, those hot days and warm nights are not too far away.
