High 90s temps coming to Arizona soon. How common is that in March?
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A ridge of high pressure will likely send temperatures into the 90s next week, and it’s possible that a few days could hit 95 or higher!
It’s not too common to get that kind of heat in March, but it does happen sometimes.
Let’s look at the top rankings for the number of March days that hit 95 or higher in Phoenix since 1896. The year 2015 tops the list at five days with 95+ temperatures.

You will notice above that there is a four-way tie at two days of temperatures that hit at least 95 in March.
How common is it to get at least one day with a 95+ March high temperature? That depends on how far we look back into history. Going back to 1896, there has been at least one March 95-or-higher day on 13 out of 129 years; that’s equivalent to a 10% rate.

However, since temperatures are generally getting warmer, it might make more sense to look at this over more recent times. Instead of going back to the late 1800s, let’s look at 95+ Phoenix days in March that occur at least once since the year 2000.

Since the year 2000, six out of 25 years have a March with at least one day at 95 degrees or warmer; that’s a rate of 24%. In other words, while March 95+ days are not common, they are becoming more common in recent times.
