Freeway closures in northern, eastern Arizona extend into weekend
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The largest winter storm for Arizona this week has come and gone but freeways are closed for another winter storm.
According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, the roads that are closed due to winter weather as of Saturday morning are:
- Interstate 40 eastbound near Kingman and Ash Fork (mileposts 71 & 146)
- Interstate 40 westbound in Winslow (milepost 252)
- Interstate 17 northbound at State Route 179 (milepost 299)
- State Route 89A (both directions) between Sedona and I-17 (mileposts 375-394)
- State Route 87 southbound near Winslow (milepost 338)
- State Route 260 (both directions) between Camp Verde and State Route 87 junction (mileposts 228-251)
The highways remained closed through Friday night and into Saturday morning.
Drivers are still using I-40 despite the dangerous conditions. Another crash on Friday afternoon killed four people near Holbrook, DPS said.
Crashes closed areas on I-40 west on Thursday of Flagstaff, including one crash that killed two people.
ADOT said snowplows are working around-the-clock in affected areas and remind drivers not to tailgate a snowplow.
“State troopers are cracking down on unsafe driving statewide. Driving is a privilege- if you violate the law, expect to be issued a citation. Expect to go to jail if you are criminally speeding or driving recklessly,” said Lt. Colonel Daven Byrd of DPS’ Highway Patrol Division after announcing a recent crackdown of driving violations.
Humboldt Unified and Prescott Unified canceled classes for Friday. Though students are on spring break this week, Northern Arizona University closed its campus due to the winter weather on Friday.
The storm also delayed at least 70 flights at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport at its height on Thursday, according to flightaware.
Across the Valley, at the height of the storm, about 5,600 SRP customers were without power, and about 2,200 APS customers didn’t have electricity. Those numbers have dropped to about 30 SRP customers and 230 APS customers. For an SRP outage map, click/tap here. For the APS outage map, click/tap here.
While the rain and snow was impacting the state, wind gusts were also a problem on Thursday. Phoenix saw gusts peaking at 54 mph, while Bullhead City had seen wind gusts of 61 mph. Blowing dust could be seen in the far southeast Valley.
Rainfall totals saw 0.16″ fall at Phoenix Sky Harbor while some gauges in the East Valley saw more than half an inch.
