I-40, SR 87 reopen in northern Arizona following snowstorm
ASH FORK, AZ (AZFamily) — A freeway has partially reopened after snow was dumped in the High Country on Friday.
Arizona Department of Transportation officials announced that I-40 eastbound in Kingman and Ash Fork have both reopened on Saturday morning.
I-40 and SR 87 are both now open near Winslow, and I-40 is back open in Holbrook.
ADOT crews, emergency responders, and tow truck operators worked to clear a lengthy queue near Williams. The freeway was also closed due to the vehicle slide-offs from ice and snow.
Photos from ADOT showed several semi-trucks jackknifed on the slick road.
The following highways remain closed
Some Arizona communities received two feet of snow. Though the height of the storm has passed, icy and slick roads are still prevalent on many highways in northern Arizona.
Arizona Snowbowl posted on X, stating that 27 inches was dumped on the mountain in 24 hours. Over three feet of fresh snow fell over the last 48 hours!
The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office said search and rescue teams helped several stranded drivers on Drake Road, off of Highway 89. The drivers were attempting to get around the I-40 closure but got stuck in the snow.
“Drake Road was closed and is not a bypass. Despite this, drivers continue to take the off-highway route, creating hazardous situations. This is an ongoing issue during snowstorms when I-40 is closed,” the department posted on its Facebook page.
Deputies say drivers should avoid Drake or Perkinsville roads, even if their phone’s maps app suggests so.
ADOT encourages drivers to be prepared to spend extra time off the road. Drivers should consider packing an emergency travel kit before hitting the road. A full list of items to pack in a winter emergency kit is available at azdot.gov/KnowSnow.
ADOT snowplows are working around the clock in affected areas, clearing snow and ice from highways. Drivers should not tailgate a snowplow; instead, leave four car lengths between the snowplow and their vehicle.
