Part of Arizona in highest drought category since 2022
MOHAVE COUNTY, AZ (AZFamily) — It’s no secret that it’s been quite dry lately in Arizona.
It’s been so dry that part of Mohave County is now in the “exceptional drought” category. This is notable because no part of Arizona has been in this category since August 2022.
The “exceptional drought” category is in the maroon color that is covering a very small section of northwest Mohave County on the map below. You will also notice that most of Arizona is in either extreme drought (red color) or severe drought (orange color).

To show how rare the “exceptional drought” category is, you can look at the timeline below showing only that category in Arizona since the year 2000.

That small blip on the far right is when a small part of Arizona was in exceptional drought in 2022. Note that from late 2020 into part of 2021, a much larger percentage of Arizona was in “exceptional drought.” That number actually made it up to 76% in December 2020.
This puts things into perspective.
It shows that while we really need some rain and snow to put a dent in our drought, this drought is not as widespread as the drought in late 2020 into the middle of 2021.
We are tracking a potential rain-maker (and snow-maker) from the middle towards the end of next week. Let’s hope this one delivers!
