Monsoon helps break a few Arizona rainfall records
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Monsoon season has started, and a few Arizona cities have broken daily rainfall records over the past few days.
On Tuesday, we told you about the flooding in the Flagstaff area as a shelter-in-place order was temporarily put in place. Over 2 inches of rainfall fell in some spots, and the official observation site in Flagstaff recorded 0.91 inches of rainfall, which broke a daily record.
Prescott set a daily record on Tuesday too with 0.38 inches of rainfall. Higher rainfall amounts, with some estimates between 2 and 3 inches, fell just to the southwest of Prescott.
Globe also set a daily record on Tuesday with 1.26 inches of rainfall, although this particular observation station only has records going back to 2009. Even so, it’s still the most rain that has fallen at this location on June 25th since at least 2009.
On Monday, Scottsdale set a daily rainfall record with 0.08 inches of rainfall. This does not sound that impressive, so how is this a record? It’s because June tends to be fairly dry, so it does not take much to break a daily rainfall record. In addition, that particular location in Scottsdale only has records that go back to 2000.
