Arizona sees major increase in extreme drought conditions in past month
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The new weekly report from the U.S. Drought Monitor shows that the majority of Arizona continues to sit in the “extreme drought” category.
This is nearly identical to the report from last week, but it is remarkable to see the change in Arizona’s drought status over the past month.
About one month ago on January 30, about 21% of the state was covered by extreme drought, which is denoted by the red color in the chart below.

As of Thursday, February 27, almost 53% of Arizona is sitting in extreme drought.

It’s also interesting to see how this year compares to last year at this time. In late February of 2024, only a small sliver of southeast Arizona was in extreme drought.

The weather pattern does look a bit more active next week, but it remains to be seen if this will make a decent dent in the drought.
