Utility provider asks thousands West Valley homeowners to conserve water; here’s why
Liberty Utilities, which provides water to areas in Avondale, Glendale, Goodyear, and Litchfield Park, says a low water supply is to blame for the call to lower water use.
AVONDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — Thousands of homeowners in the West Valley are being asked to step up and help conserve water.
Liberty Utilities sent out a stage two notice to customers on Tuesday. It says that the company’s water supply level is down to 80%, and they’re requesting customers take steps to conserve.
“What we do is monitor our levels in the system, and so all of monitoring shows we met stage two criteria, so we activate it to be able to help voluntarily conserve water with our customers,” said Sara Alloway, with Liberty Utilities.
Liberty Utilities currently serves more than 20,000 customers in parts of Avondale, Glendale, Goodyear and Litchfield Park.
Mimi Rodriguez is a nurse who has lived in Avondale for 14 years.
She’s not surprised that residents are being asked to adjust how much water they use.
“I see people washing their cars every week-end, cleaning their driveways,” said Rodriguez. “A lot of times I just see water running. I don’t know where it is coming from, there’s so much water in the neighborhood.”
Liberty Utilities indicated that its request is voluntary. It hopes that everyone will do their part and that mandatory conservation can be avoided.
Some of the suggestions to reduce water include:
- Eliminate Runoff from outdoor irrigation
- Use a shut-off hose nozzle when using a hose
- Avoid washing driveways/sidewalks
- Fix indoor/outdoor leaks
- Use Water saving devices whenever possible.
Avondale homeowner Monica Baquera said she’s already reduced the days she waters her plants and hopes her neighbors do the same.
“I think we are wasting too much water,” said Baquera. “I see many houses that are dripping water, they just don’t care. I don’t mind cutting back a little bit.”
Liberty Utility is also encouraging customers to follow an outdoor water schedule,
Addresses that end in 1,2,4, 7, 0, should water on Monday and Thursday. Addresses that end 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, should water on Tuesday and Friday.
