PHOENIX (AZFamily) — With First Alert Weather Days issued for heat in the Valley this weekend, car experts are advising drivers to get their cars checked before we reach high triple-digit temperatures.

Glen Hayward, owner of Good Works Auto Repair in Tempe, said nearing triple digits can make cars vulnerable, especially if we’re not keeping up with maintenance.

“Cars are one of the things that get overly hot or heated because it is exposed to sunlight and high temperatures,” Hayward said. “Ambient temperatures can affect the way a car operates if your car has been overheating, and you’ll end up spending a lot more time repairing what should have been done preventatively.”

According to Hayward and other experts with Neighborhood Auto Repair Professionals (NARPRO), it’s important for drivers to do the following to avoid costly repairs:

  • Check tires for alignment, cuts, cracks and pressure
  • Routinely replace air and oil filters
  • Get oil changed

Hayward said preventative maintenance not only saves your car, but it could also save you thousands of dollars in repairs.

“Savings can be 70% to 80% over the life of the vehicle,” Hayward said. “Replacing an oil filter is like $5. To replace your motor, it could be between $10,000 to $15,000.”

Hayward said to go to a trusted professional for car maintenance needs. He also urged drivers to not listen to social media hacks to fix your car for a lower cost because you may end up doing more damage in the end.
