ST. JOHNS, AZ (AZFamily) — The Apache County Board of Supervisors will have to decide who the next county attorney is, becoming one step closer Wednesday by approving the job application.

Michael Whiting was the face of law enforcement in Apache County for more than a decade before his office was the focus of search warrants and state charges.

Whiting and his wife, Joy, the county schools superintendent and an investigator in his office, are charged with misusing taxpayer money.

Michael and that investigator is also accused of threatening his wife’s political opponent. Joy remains the school superintendent as she was reelected.

As if that’s not enough, Michael faces two state bar complaints.

His law license was suspended in November, and because one’s license must be in good standing, the board removed him from office last month; but Whiting won reelection.

With his law license suspended, he can’t hold the office voters elected him into.

You can apply for the open position by visiting the county’s website. Those interested in the position have until Dec. 11 to complete the application.
