Slimy organic material in ice machine among violations at Phoenix-area restaurants

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Every week, Arizona’s Family looks up restaurants recently inspected by Maricopa County’s Environmental Services Department. Restaurants with some of the highest numbers of “risk factors,” considered major health code violations by inspectors, are selected for our Dirty Dining Report. Here are the Valley restaurants that did not make the grade for Dec. 11, 2024:

Tokyo Joe’s - 1935 S Val Vista Drive, Mesa

3 violations

• Dishwasher not cleaning properly
• Mushrooms and cooked broccoli not kept hot enough
• Pork dumplings not stored cold enough

China Buffet - 17119 N Litchfield Road, Surprise

3 violations

• Black, slimy organic like material in ice machine
• Cream cheese not kept cold enough
• No log of when food was put out on buffet line

Society - 920 E University Drive, Tempe

3 violations

• Pan of raw egg yolks above ready to eat foods
• Black, grimy organic material on top of ice machine
• Whipped cream and chipotle sauce kept past discard dates

Hurricane Grill and Wings - 11340 W Bell Road, Surprise

3 violations

• Employee handled raw burger patties then didn’t wash hands
• Cooked chicken wings stored under raw meat
• Tray of chicken breasts not kept at proper temperature

Zipps Sports Grill - 3110 N Central Avenue, Phoenix

4 violations

• No certified food manager on duty
• No paper towels at hand sink
• Corn dog batter stored above raw fish
• Veggies kept past discard date
