Phoenix Suns name new GM as Jones transitions to new role
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Big front office changes have been announced for the Phoenix Suns after a disappointing season ended with the team missing the playoffs.
The team announced Thursday that general manager James Jones will be transitioning to a senior advisor role for the Suns. Meanwhile, Brian Gregory will take over as the franchise’s new general manager after being promoted from vice president.
“Brian has been a valuable member of our front office, playing an integral role in drafting and developing our young players,” said Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia. “I am excited for him to step in to the role of general manager. He is a brilliant basketball mind, and he will transform and elevate our team.”
“James’ contributions have been instrumental to our organization, and we appreciate everything he has done for the Suns on and off the court,” Ishbia added. “We are grateful to continue to have his experience and insight.”
In addition to the slew of changes at the top, Oronde Taliaferro was promoted to assistant general manager. Paul Rivers has also been tasked with basketball operations responsibilities in addition to his current role as chief innovation officer.
The Phoenix Suns ended the season with a 36-46 record and finished 11th in the Western Conference, which led to the firing of head coach Mike Budenholzer after just one season.
