MESA, AZ (AZFamily) — In front of dozens of family and friends, Benjamin Morrison saw his dream of becoming an NFL player turn into reality. With the 53rd overall pick, Morrison was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

It was an emotional moment for the former Brophy Prep and Notre Dame standout. “It feels great,” Morrison said. “Just to be around my people I love and who are so close to me, it’s everything I ever wanted. Everything I ever imagined. I’m so excited to get out there.”

When Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles called Morrison with the news, it hit the standout cornerback hard. “I think it’s just all the built-up anxiousness, anxiety,” he said. “The nerves, the early-morning wakeups. Just it’s all of those. Seeing that you’re finally making that young kid in yourself proud, it’s truly a special feeling. I can’t explain it.”

Morrison had a tough junior year at Notre Dame, suffering a hip injury that required surgery after only playing six games. That might have lowered his draft stock, which frustrated the 21-year-old at times. “I had to check myself,” he said. “I’m right where God wanted me to be. Right where he needed me to be. There’s a reason why I was that pick.”

“Man, I’m just fired up for Ben,” Brophy Prep head coach Jason Jewell added. “A big deal in his journey of life. Just the start. I’m emotional right now, just so proud of Ben.”

Morrison is ready to hit the ground running in Tampa. “I’m ready to compete,” he said. “I’m ready to get out there and figure out the way I can best help the team win Super Bowls.”
