Lee Corso to retire from College GameDay
(Gray News) - Lee Corso, a staple on ESPN’s popular pregame show College GameDay, will make his final appearance on the show in the upcoming college football season.
Corso, 89, will do one final headgear pick for week one of the college football season on Aug. 30. The tradition of putting on a mascot head to announce the prediction of a marquee matchup of the week dates back to 1996.
“My family and I will be forever indebted for the opportunity to be part of ESPN and College GameDay for nearly 40 years,” Corso said in a statement. “I have a treasure of many friends, fond memories and some unusual experiences to take with me into retirement.”
Corso has worked at ESPN since 1987 and has been a critical part of the success of the network’s pregame show, traveling to college campuses across the country. His longtime partner Kirk Herbstreit called him a “second father.”
“It has been my absolute honor to have the best seat in the house to watch Coach put on that mascot head each week,” Herbstreit said.
ESPN announced the Aug. 30 show will honor and celebrate Corso’s career.
