PHOENIX (AZFamily) — It appears the Arizona Diamondbacks will be set at second base for years to come. According to multiple reports, the Snakes have agreed to a six-year, $116 million contract extension with All-Star Ketel Marte. The deal reportedly replaces the five-year, $76 million contract he signed in 2022.

The 31-year-old finished third in MVP voting last season, where he hit .292 and career highs with 36 home runs and 95 RBIs. He earned his second All-Star selection and won his first career Silver Slugger award.

Marte is considered a cornerstone for the D-backs and the deal includes a player option in 2031 for $11.5 million, according to ESPN. With incentives, the detail could be worth up to $149.5 million and Marte could retire in the desert.

He’s spent nine of his 11 seasons in the Valley of the Sun. Marte started his career with the Seattle Mariners. In 2016, he was traded to the D-backs with Taijuan Walker for Jean Segura, Mitch Haniger and Zac Curis.

Marte gained national recognition in 2019 when he earned his first All-Star selection and finished fourth in the NL MVP voting after hitting .329 with 32 home runs and 92 RBIs. During the Diamondbacks’ World Series run in 2023, he had a hit in the first 16 postseason games, the longest hitting streak by any player to start his postseason career in MLB history. He batted .387 in the National League Championship Series and was named NLCS MVP.
