Why the bill helping fund Chase Field repairs may be dead in the Senate
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The future is uncertain for a bill that would help fund ballpark renovations to Chase Field to keep the Arizona Diamondbacks playing in downtown Phoenix. House Bill 2704 was taken off a Senate agenda because it didn’t have enough support.
Rep. Jeff Weninger, a Republican from Chandler, sponsored the bill and is working to get more votes. The bill redirects $500 million to repair the nearly 30-year-old Chase Field.
The House approved the measure in February before it hit roadblocks in the Senate. The proposal could be brought back to the Senate for a vote if Weninger finds enough votes.
If not, it’s possible the money that the stadium needs could be part of a larger budget deal, which is typically made behind closed doors and away from the public.
When asked if that was the case, Weninger didn’t rule it out. “I really have no idea but the important thing for me is to get the bill done and to keep the Arizona Diamondbacks here in Arizona,” he said when asked if it would go through the regular process.
The Diamondbacks have hinted in the past few years they could move the team if they don’t get a stadium deal. However, they have said they want to stay in downtown Phoenix.
