Wet weather cancels Phoenix-area spring training games, impacts NASCAR
Other outdoor events still a go
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Thousands of baseball fans were left disappointed on Friday when the wet weather rolled into the Valley and canceled some spring training games.
Four of the six games for the afternoon were called off:
- Arizona Diamondbacks at Los Angeles Angels (split squad) in Tempe
- San Diego Padres at Milwaukee Brewers in Maryvale
- San Francisco Giants at Cincinati Reds in Goodyear
- Chicago Cubs at Chicago White Sox in Glendale
The other two afternoon games, Los Angeles Angels (split squad) at Kansas City Royals in Surprise and Cleveland Guardians at Oakland Athletics in Mesa, went on as planned. The Angels and Guardians both won.
At around 4:30 p.m., the game between the Texas Rangers and the Colorado Rockies in Scottsdale was canceled. It was set to start at 6:40 p.m.
The other night game, Los Angeles Dodgers at Seattle Mariners in Peoria, started on time.
The stormy weather impacted the NASCAR weekend at Phoenix Raceway in Avondale. Friday’s hauler parade through the campgrounds and the qualifying for the General Tire 150 were canceled.
Officials warned campers several times about lightning in the area but then around 3 p.m., normal operations at the raceway resumed.
Workers had to dry the track around 5:30 p.m. and that delayed the pre-race ceremonies for the General Tire 150. Drivers got the green flag around 6:30 p.m.
The M3F Festival, a music festival being held at Steele Indian School Park in Phoenix on Friday and Saturday, is a rain-or-shine event. Organizers say attendees are allowed to bring ponchos and umbrellas and are encouraged to dress warm. Tickets are still available.
The spring edition of the Tempe Festival of the Arts also started on Friday in the wet weather. It’s a free event outside and crowds were thinner than usual. However, sunny skies are set to make a return on Saturday and Sunday.
