Arizona House passes bill to fund repairs at D-backs’ Chase Field
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A bill that would help fund repairs needed at Arizona Diamondbacks’ Chase Field in downtown Phoenix took a significant step toward becoming law on Wednesday.
The Arizona House passed House Bill 2704 in a 35-25 vote and now heads to the Senate.
“Today was a first step victory in this much-needed public/private partnership,” said Arizona Diamondbacks president and CEO Derrick Hall in a statement. “Allowing this proud franchise to remain at Chase Field for continued economic and community impact is in the best interest of the City, County, State, and Major League Baseball.”
The measure would create a fund where a percentage of sales and income taxes generated from baseball games or events at Chase Field would go toward paying for much-needed stadium maintenance and repairs.
Income taxes from players and ballpark employees would also go into the renovation fund.
The bill would create hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars for the team.
The D-backs would also kick in at least $250 million for repairs.
However, not everyone is on board. Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said the bill’s fund would take $200 million from the city, which she says would “have a real impact on our ability to pay for police and fire services.”
“Two-thirds of Phoenix’s general fund supports public safety. Phoenix’s tax dollars are best spent supporting our firefighters who respond to emergencies, helping police fight crime, and combating homelessness—not used to pay for subsidies for those at the very top," Gallego said.
