‘Hail Murray’ attempt comes up short as Arizona Cardinals fall to Buffalo Bills
BUFFALO, NY (AZFamily) — Kyler Murray unfortunately couldn’t complete yet another “Hail Murray” pass to defeat the Buffalo Bills on Sunday morning. The Red Birds dropped the season opener and fell to the Bills 34-28.

Late in the fourth, Murray launched a deep ball up for Greg Dortch, who unfortunately couldn’t come down with it as he was covered by Ja’Marcus Ingram. A 96-yard house call wasn’t enough to propel the Arizona Cardinals to victory either.
DeeJay Dallas turned on the jets during a kickoff return, rushing for 96 yards untouched for the score. The Cardinals cut the Bills’ lead thanks to Conner’s successful two-point conversion, putting the team at 31-28.
The Cardinals had a chance to stop the Bills to open the second half. Buffalo faced a 3rd & 11, but the Cardinals defense was unable to contain running back James Cook, who grabbed the first down on a 25-yard pickup from Allen. Buffalo continued marching down the field and finished off the drive with a Mack Hollins touchdown, tying the game at 17 apiece.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals seemed to have briefly lost a groove after the tying touchdown. Murray was sacked by Rousseau and fumbled the ball. In the chaos, Buffalo’s Dorian Williams recovered it and set the Bills up at the Cardinals 21-yard line.
Buffalo didn’t stop to capitalize on the Cardinals mistake. Allen quickly found Khalil Shakir and put the Bills up 24-17, their first lead of the game.
The Red Birds held a commanding 17-3 lead in the first half, but were unable to put a stop to Buffalo’s offense. Buffalo scored on three drives unanswered, keeping the Cardinals at bay.
Costly mistakes on the Cardinals defense put Buffalo in prime scoring position. Sean Murphy-Bunting was handed a five-yard penalty for holding. Zaven Collins was given a roughing the passer penalty for a hit on Allen. The back-to-back penalties put Buffalo at the Cardinals 26-yard line, and Allen scrambled in for the score to cut the Cardinals lead to 17-10.
The Cardinals opened the game with an impressive 70-yard touchdown drive. James Conner picked up a 22-yard pass from Murray, and a penalty on Buffalo’s J Ingram for unnecessary roughness put the Cardinals within the Bills’ 20-yard line. All Murray needed was a short 5-yard pass to Michael Wilson to pick up the score.
The Red Birds will travel home to face the Los Angeles Rams at 1:05 p.m. next Sunday.
