PHOENIX (AZFamily)— When he’s not on the court for the Phoenix Suns, Devin Booker can often be found in the stands at Phoenix Mercury or Arizona Diamondbacks games. When he is, you might notice a piece of technology that some would consider outdated or obsolete.

But to Booker, camcorders have become a way to document his life and leave something to look back on in the future with a certain organic quality that no longer exists in the age of smartphones and digital filters. He sat down with AZ Family’s Nick King to talk about his appreciation for camcorders and how they helped capture his experience during the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Nick King: “So I was fascinated with all the camcorder stuff at the Olympics. And thinking back to, I think the first time I remember seeing you with the camera watching the game was WNBA finals. And then I’ve seen the Diamondbacks games with the camera. Like, how did that all start?”

Devin Booker: “Just a couple good buddies of mine. Early on, I mean, I brought them to All-Star weekend in, like, my first and second year in the league. So, you know, I have a lot of content in the vault. You know, I’ve never really quickly turned around anything and released it like that. But, you know, just understand the importance of it. And, you know, I watch it back sometimes and I can only imagine if I feel how I feel about it now. I’m going to feel it 20, 30 years [from now], and someday I’ll be able to pass down to the next generation, because you sit back and look at some pretty cool stuff going on.”

Nick King: “Was that the vision originally, when you were a young guy in the league with the camera, like having it as a vault to look at years down the road?”

Devin Booker: “Yeah. Because it was always a dream of mine to, you know, even just make the NBA. And then I remember my first All-Star weekend. I was like, I want to capture this. And my good buddy put me on to the to the Handycam. He was like, it just has a different feel than the iPhone footage. And ever since then, you know, when you watch it back one time, like you feel like you’re watching some from the past and kind of have to pay attention more and listen harder to what was going on. So I like the process.”

Nick King: “How many do you have?”

Devin Booker: “Oh, those are like disposables, man. They’re all laying around the house.”

Nick King: “Are you getting in there like editing?”

Devin Booker: “No I don’t, I don’t, I don’t do that. But I’m right there when my buddy Jake was cutting it up. So. Yeah, I’m part of it.”

Nick King: “Do you appreciate the art side of it, too?”

Devin Booker: “100%. You know you get the capture the moments like, it’s a time capsule. And it always wasn’t like this so, you know, we got to take advantage of it. We have access and resources.”
