PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - Phoenix Rising clinched a spot in the USL championship postseason last Saturday night with a 1-1 draw against Orange County. Now, the team is positioned to host a playoff match. But to do that, they’ll need forward Danny Trejo to keep playing at the high level he’s set so far this season.

As one of the top scorers in the USL, Trejo is focused on his goals, both on and off the field.  “I’ve had a lot of good goals. A lot of good goals,” Said Trejo, who’s a scorer, plain and simple. “I think I was like six, seven years, I would score, like five, six goals in a game. People would be like, ‘Oh, he should be playing at older age. He’s too good to play at this age. So that’s when I knew that scoring goals was something that I just had in me, you know.”

Juan Guerra, head coach of the Phoenix Rising FC, has high praise for Trejo. “He’s an unbelievable player. Everybody knows that. We knew that before he was coming in. Danny knows he’s a good player too.”

At just 25 years old, Trejo holds the California high school record for career goals and is tied for the USL lead this season, his first with Phoenix Rising, finding the back of the net 17 times.

The 14th overall pick in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft, Trejo expects to be back in the United States’ top league at some point. “Since I’ve been little, I’ve been just always wanting more, and in a way, I am where I want to be for now. But obviously, there’s more to go. So that’s that’s what it is.”
