ASU hires GCU’s Molly Miller as head women’s basketball coach
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Fresh off leading the Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team to its first NCAA Division I Tournament appearance, head coach Molly Miller landed a new job, but she won’t have to move very far.
On Saturday, Arizona State announced that it had hired Miller to take over the Sun Devils’ program. Miller fills the vacancy created on March 8 when ASU fired Natasha Adair after three seasons.
Miller had become one of the hottest commodities on the coaching market following a remarkable season leading the Antelopes. In her fifth season at GCU, Miller’s team posted a 32-3 record that included a 30-game winning streak and a Western Athletic Conference championship. She was also named the WAC Coach of the Year. The Antelopes run ended with a 73-60 loss to Baylor in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
During her tenure at GCU, Miller posted a 117-38 record that included four straight 20-win seasons.
Prior to her time leading the Antelopes, the Missouri native had tremendous success as the head coach of Division II Drury—her alma mater. Over six seasons at the helm, she tallied a 180-17 record with five Great Lakes Valley Conference titles and five trips to the NCAA Division II Tournaments, highlighted by a Final Four appearance in 2019. She starred for Drury as a player, earning a spot in the school’s Hall of Fame, before beginning her coaching career there as an assistant 2012.
Miller will be tasked with turning around a Sun Devil program that hasn’t been to the NCAA Tournament since 2019. After legendary head coach Charli Turner Thorne retired following the 2021-2022 season, Adair was hired by then-Athletic Director Ray Anderson. Over her three seasons, Adair posted a 29-62 overall record, with a dismal 7-47 conference record.
