Peoria teacher honored for work with kids with disabilities
Silver Apple is sponsored by Desert Financial Credit Union.
PEORIA, AZ (AZFamily) — It’s time to recognize an outstanding person in our community!
Amy Witters is a special education in the Peoria Unified School District. Her mission is to help guide and grow her students in the ABLE program. She’s also the recipient of our Silver Apple Award.
Inside Mrs. Witters' class, you’ll find a bulletin board full of art, along with the words, “Our world of colorful changing work.”
While the work changes, Mrs. Witters is the constant. She’s always there providing the warm and caring presence her students have come to love and appreciate. Parents too!
“When you have a child with significant disabilities, it can be really hard for people to see just them, and Mrs. Witters has done just that,” said Nicole Guysi, whose daughter Brook is in Mrs. Witters' class. She nominated Mrs. Witters for the Silver Apple Award.
“Mrs. Witters provides what’s needed and supports the team. I feel confident Brooke is an environment to encourage and grow her. She is a woman to be admired, a teacher to be respected. She is deserving of this,” Guysi wrote in her nomination form.
Our crew surprised Mrs. Witters during class, and she was shocked.
“It’s an honor,” she said. “It’s so much fun to work with them and teach them and see them grow. I’ve seen such great things.”
“Brooke’s graduating this year. She’s going to high school, and we feel confident in her success,” Guysi said to Mrs. Witters.
In addition to the Silver Apple Award, our friends at Desert Financial Credit Union surprised her with a $1,000 reward.
In her 12 years at Sahuaro Ranch Elementary, she’s taught over 100 students in the ABLE program, which supports students with disabilities.
“It’s crazy to think of the impact that I’ve had on these kids. I mean, I try my best and come in, and some days it’s amazing and you see such growth, and then other days, I go okay, we’re going to do this again tomorrow. But it’s so much fun and seeing them grow is my favorite part,” Mrs. Witters said.
