PHOENIX (AZFamily) — According to the latest numbers from the Maricopa Association of Governments, there are nearly 15,000 people experiencing homelessness in Maricopa County. Nationwide, more than half a million people experience this each year.

So, it is Something Good when a nonprofit works to destigmatize homelessness and rehumanize people through care packages and meaningful connections across the Phoenix area.

The nonprofit Project Umbrella was founded in New York City in 2015 and has since expanded to Phoenix, Seattle and Austin. The Phoenix team has hosted four events in six months, impacting the lives of over 400 people.

People experiencing homelessness are given care packages filled with hygiene kits, socks, gloves, blankets and other essentials. Volunteers listen and share stories with each person they meet, giving those in need a voice when they may need it most.

The nonprofit says 100% of donations go directly to the mission, and the team is fully volunteer-based.
