Decades later, Phoenix diner & soda fountain continues serving classic favorites
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — MacAlpine’s Diner & Soda Fountain first opened in 1929 and is one of the few remaining soda fountains in the United States.
If these walls could talk, they would tell tales about how hard the young newspaper boy worked to earn 10 cents for an old-fashioned malt and of the many “regulars” that purchased their Burma Shave or Prince Albert (in a can) here. Throughout the years, customers included Frank Lloyd Wright, Barry Goldwater, Wayne Newton, Winnie Ruth Judd, John McCain, and Rose Mofford.
Now, MacAlpine’s remains the community’s favorite neighborhood joint, still serving up classic favorites like a burger and fries to old-fashioned ice cream sodas. Their award-winning pies are from Amish recipes and are delicious and memorable.
MacAlpine’s was closed for four years originally due to COVID, but then the family had some health issues and the death of one of the owners. A few months later, as they were making a plan to reopen, owner Monica Heizenrader had a terrible accident and was not able to walk.
The family’s perseverance and loyal customer support were able to get MacAlpine’s open again. They now need your help to ensure the long-term success of this magical piece of Arizona history.
Right next door is MacAlpine’s Retro Store, where you can find everything from antique furniture to vintage clothing. This staple of the Phoenix area invites customers old and new to step back in time and stay for a while at this historic establishment.
