PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Meta is rolling out new teen accounts for Facebook and Messenger. The new age-based accounts will restrict who can contact teens, and the type of content they’ll see.

“Teen accounts are automatic, built-in protections for teens. We automatically enroll them. Teens actually don’t have to do anything. We put them in these teen accounts,” said Jennifer Hanley, the North American Head of Safety at Meta. “If you’re under the age of 16 and you want to move into less restriction, you actually need your parents’ permission.”

Meta also has new parental supervision tools.

“They can get insight into who their teens are messaging. They can set more restrictions for the time of day, for example, that teens use our platform,” Hanley said.

The social media giant launched teen accounts on Instagram last year. The company says 54 million teens have enrolled in those teen accounts.

“We’ve been really happy with the rollout of Instagram teen accounts, and that’s part of why we wanted to bring it to other apps that we have,” Hanley said.
