Queen Creek teen featured in documentary film highlighting female baseball players
QUEEN CREEK, AZ (AZFamily) — As many across the globe celebrate International Women’s Day this weekend, a new feature-length documentary is spotlighting female baseball players.
The film See Her Be Her looks at the global rise of women in baseball. One of the players featured is an Arizona teen!
Lauren Camp, 14, is a catcher from Queen Creek who made history as the first girl to play baseball for Sossaman Middle School. She is among the many young female ballplayers featured in the film, which highlights the journeys of these baseball players worldwide and how they’re impacting the sport.
“This is a film about women’s baseball around the globe, the past, present, and future of girls and women on and off the field. And what you learn is through the lives of seven incredible women from seven different countries is that baseball is prevalent around the world and that women can play baseball. This film shines a spotlight on them and how well they are, how well they do in their pursuit of the 2024 Women’s Baseball World Cup,” said Jeff Idelson, co-founder of Grassroots Baseball.
Jean Fruth, director of the film and co-founder of Grassroots Baseball, says many around the globe may not know that women and girls play baseball.
“They say, ‘Oh, softball. Right?’ But, no, we mean baseball,” Fruth said. “What our job is with our cameras is to tell these stories to create visibility. And with visibility, we hope that there’s more opportunity for Lauren, more opportunity for girls coming up in the game, and more opportunities for women to play at the highest level.”
Lauren has been playing baseball her whole life. The young athlete says playing for Sossaman Baseball has always been a personal goal for her.
Now, she’s paving the way for young women and shares a special message for girls who want to be just like her.
“My message is to just follow your dreams and don’t care what other people say. Just do what you want to do and just have fun and cherish the moments that you get,” she said.
The film screening will be held on Saturday, March 8, at 5 p.m. at AMC Desert Ridge, located near Deer Valley Drive and Tatum Boulevard.
Moviegoers can participate in a panel discussion with local baseball executives, coaches, journalists and young female players.
