PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Tonya Saidi, the owner of Mamma Toledo’s The Pie Hole, started baking pies in 1995 after her mother passed away from cancer.

She baked for people to show love and appreciation, perhaps for people’s birthdays or work potlucks. Sometimes, it’s just a special treat for a special person.

That love of baking grew into a career that began when Saidi started selling sweet pies at farmer’s markets in 2010. The next year, she purchased a vintage 1968 Chevy Step-Van and entered the food truck scene selling five-inch mini sweet pies.

Once she gained customers and learned the food truck business, she opened her first storefront with a fellow food truck business, Short Leash Hot Dogs, in 2013 near 1st Street and Roosevelt.

Then in 2014, Mamma Toledo’s moved into its own space off of 7th Street between Thomas and McDowell, where she expanded the menu and started selling breakfast and savory pies.

The future held another move when Mamma Toledo’s The Pie Hole moved again to its current home in Moon Valley. The menu includes her famous five-inch sweet pies, 10-inch whole pies, take-and-bake savory pies, breakfast, cakes, cheesecakes, ice cream and coffee.

And Saidi still has that beautiful 1968 Chevy Step-Van for catering private parties, weddings, graduations and corporate events.
