LIX Uptown Ice Cream serving lactose-free, scratch-made sweet treats in central Phoenix
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — LIX is the brainchild of Rich Dolan, a Phoenix local since 1996. The scratch-made ice cream shop was born from his 30 years in the food and hospitality business, his love of ice cream, passion for quality, high standards for customer service and his personal lactose intolerance. The lactose intolerance came as a result of Rich’s battle with cancer, which he ultimately conquered!
Conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic, Rich’s intention for LIX was to open an ice cream shop where you could walk through the door and leave all of the outside stressors in the world at the door while eating the best ice cream you have ever had.
When most of us were perfecting our sourdough bread recipes during lockdown, Rich began churning ice cream at home, creating flavors like roasted sweet corn and raspberry. He would leave pints hanging on neighbors’ doors due to social distancing, and the neighbors raved about the ice cream and the flavors. Rich knew he had a winner!
Rich was concerned about mentioning that his ice cream was lactose-free, although it’s still 100% dairy-made ice cream and qualifies as a super-premium ice cream product.
The dilemma was that most people would hear lactose-free and assume that it’s not real ice cream. Rich decided to follow his desire to make a difference in this world and proudly make it clear that LIX is lactose-free. He says seeing the reactions on the faces of folks who haven’t been able to enjoy real ice cream without getting sick for years is priceless! To know that LIX has made their lives better in some small way is truly inspiring.
At LIX, they start every batch with the intention of provoking a serendipitous experience for each guest. Only positive vibes are allowed in the kitchen when they churn; they often make it a dance party!
