Nonprofit collects supplies to make life easier for Arizona foster kids
Finding Forever is sponsored by Christian Brothers
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Life in foster care can be tough. Drug use, violence, loneliness and dismantled families are all things kids can face after their lives are upended because their parents are unable to take care of them properly.
Sometimes it is not having the small things, like toiletries and school supplies, because you are moving from group home to group home.
That is where groups like AASK, Aid to Adoption of Special Kids, come in.
They are the largest foster care agency in the state and the organization Arizona’s Family partners with on our Finding Forever series.
Throughout the year, they gather supplies for kids in foster care.
It is a way for kids to get the basics they need and to try to maintain some sense of normalcy during a very tumultuous time.
Recently, they gathered school supplies to hand out at the start of the school year and year-round since some kids need to change districts if they move to group homes.
Volunteers like Melanie Nemetz helped sort a room full of school supplies before the school year started.
She was a foster mother and knows how important it is to try and make life as easy as possible for kids going through some very hard times. “It’s nice for a kid who’s been through a very difficult thing to know that they have more support,” she said.
“More than what they might be able to see right in front of them. They have a whole community behind them and sometimes they feel that and when they get the backpack it’s nice for them to feel that they are supported.”
AASK has supply drives throughout the year and is always looking for donations as a nonprofit.
