PEORIA, AZ (AZFamily) — It’s not uncommon for things to get ugly when two people divorce. But that’s not the case for Cindy and Roger.  Even though the two split up years ago, they remained good friends, and Roger credits Cindy for saving his life several years ago.

He had a stroke in 2017.  At the time, he was living in a Salvation Army shelter and was unable to return when he got out of the hospital.  He asked Cindy and her new husband if he could sleep on her floor for a couple of weeks while his body healed. He ended up staying with them for four years.

“Living with her, it was a different experience than when we were married,” Roger told Arizona’s Family Colton Shone.  “When we were married, I was in another world and another part of my life and I screwed all that up but I just thank God that it got restored.”

Cindy’s kindness and generosity prompted Roger to contact Arizona’s Family Surprise Squad.  The crew went with Roger to Cindy’s home in Peoria.  They waited in her driveway while Roger brought Cindy and her sister outside.  Cindy was definitely surprised when she walked around the corner and saw Colton and the crew.

“We’re out here today be cause Roger wrote us and said that you have just been an amazing person in his life who’s always there for him no matter what,” Colton explained.  “He really wanted us to spotlight you and let you know just how much you mean to him.”

Colton handed Cindy an envelope presented to her courtesy of the Valley Toyota Dealers and asked her to open it.  She was hesitant at first, not sure what she would find inside. “It’s not a snake,” Roger laughed.

Cindy opened it and discovered she was being awarded $5000. She told Colton she would use the money to fix her truck, which hadn’t been working since last fall. “Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you,” she smiled. “From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”
