MESA, AZ (AZFamily) —Adrienne is a labor and delivery nurse in her 30s who works at Chandler Regional. She’s also a wife and mom living a very busy life raising two young boys at her home in Mesa. Unfortunately, she is also battling a rare form of breast cancer. That’s why her sister-in-law asked the Surprise Squad to pay her an unexpected visit and let her know she is loved.

When Arizona’s Family Scott Pasmore and the Surprise Squad crew knocked on her door, she was a little surprised but invited everyone inside. With her husband Ryan by her side and her two children playing nearby, she described her health challenges.

“I’ve been going through chemotherapy. I’ve undergone a couple of surgeries just recently finished radiation. And the fight continues. Unfortunately, we’re finding new spots, so we’re going to keep fighting,” said Adrienne.

Adrienne said it’s a frustrating battle because her body isn’t responding to treatments like doctors would expect it to. She said the ideal situation would be for her to be cancer-free someday, but it’s not clear right now if that’s in her future.

Adrienne told Scott that there were times when she questioned why this was happening to her. Some days, she feels good; other days, the fight takes a toll on her. She also said the expenses are adding up, as is the cost of raising two children.

“She’s been very strong going through it,” Ryan added. “And I think a huge motivation is having the two little boys that we’re trying to keep her around as long as possible. She’s been very strong going through it and she’s crushing it.”

Scott handed Adrienne an envelope and asked her to open it. He said it was from Valley Toyota Dealers. With one of the boys looking over her shoulder, Adrienne pulled out a piece of paper saying she was being awarded $5,000.

“I know the numbers are probably staggering,” Scott said. “Hopefully, this will help in any little way that we can help you.

With tears in her eyes, Adrienne said it would be a huge help. “We’re going to push through, and you know, I still have time left.”
