Phoenix Fry’s shopper touched by heartwarming gesture from Surprise Squad
Surprise Squad is sponsored by Valley Toyota Dealers
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Every Surprise Squad can get emotional, but Friday’s was particularly heartwarming.
Arizona’s Family’s Ian Schwartz went to the Fry’s Food Store at 67th Avenue and Indian School to brighten the day for some shoppers.
He first flagged down a woman named Patricia. Initially, she was a little shy but told him she was a retired student aide. Ian handed her a gift card.
“Can I give you $200 to help pay for your groceries courtesy of your Valley Toyota Dealers?” Ian asked. She happily accepted the card and told Ian that it was a pretty cool gesture.
Ian then spotted another woman nearby, watching the scene unfold. She was also a little shy but told him her name was Mary. She was shopping for items that were on sale or discounted, all in an effort to save money.
Mary said she doesn’t get paid until the following week, so she’s very conscious about how much she spends.

“Can Channel 3 and your Valley Toyota Dealers help you out today with your groceries?” Ian asked. Mary got visibly emotional when Ian gave her a $200 gift card. She gasped and held her hand to her mouth in surprise.
Mary told Ian she was overwhelmed by this act of kindness. Sensing the special moment, Ian handed her a second gift card, bringing her total to $400 to spend on groceries. This time, Mary could hardly speak because she was so grateful.
Ian wrapped up the surprise by encouraging her to buy something special for herself so she wouldn’t have to pinch pennies so much. Mary happily accepted and thanked Ian.
