PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Alaska Airlines has announced the launch of a year-round, nonstop service between Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) and San Diego International Airport (SAN), starting August 20.

The Seattle-based carrier, which recently completed its merger with Hawaiian Airlines, will operate three daily flights on this route using its Boeing 737 aircraft.

This new service is part of Alaska Airlines’ broader expansion in San Diego, as the airline competes for a stronger presence in the Southern California region. Currently, Alaska is the second-largest airline at San Diego International Airport, following Southwest Airlines.

Alaska Airlines enters a competitive market for this route, as several other airlines, including Southwest, American, and Frontier, already offer multiple daily flights between the two cities.

Industry experts believe Alaska Airlines could emerge as a strong contender due to its reputation for excellent customer service and one of the most rewarding frequent-flyer programs in the industry.

Additionally, these new flights will provide Alaska Airlines passengers with access to international and East Coast routes through its OneWorld alliance partner, American Airlines, the largest carrier at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport.

Tickets for the new Phoenix-San Diego flights are now available for purchase.
