(CNN) - You’ll need a REAL ID to fly domestically in May 2025.

That’s unless you have a passport or enhanced driver’s license issued by several states.

The deadline is May 7, but you probably don’t want to wait until the last minute to get your REAL ID.

You can apply for your REAL ID compliant driver’s’ license or ID card through your local Department of Motor Vehicles.

REAL ID’s are marked with a star on the top of the card.

REAL ID’s will also be needed to access certain federal facilities.

Congress mandated the REAL ID’s in 2005 on the recommendation of the 9/11 Commission. It requires minimum security requirements for travel documents.

The Department of Homeland Security blamed the most recent two-year deadline extension in 2022 on a backlog of paperwork caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
