PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Planes are taking off and touching down at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport for the holidays.

Visitors from up north grabbed their luggage; they packed light after ditching their coats at home.

”I’m excited for what would be for us, summer weather. It’s going to be really nice,” said Andrew Rumbold, a visitor from Illinois.

The sunny Arizona skies give northerners a reason to dress down in shorts.

“You probably want to play pickleball. Yeah, pickleball and hiking, maybe,” said Tom and Cheryl Eggenberger from Minnesota.

That’s not all that’s hot in town.

Big sporting events attract families from all over, like the Fiesta Bowl and Rate Bowl.

“My son is on the team (Kansas State Wildcats), so I’m super excited for the last game of the season,” said Kevin Swanson. “So super excited. It’s his fifth year and looking forward to closing out the year with a win.”

His son landed with the KSU team at the airport earlier in the day.

The family decided to make a vacation out of it and enjoy the desert.

“We’re going to stay a little after the game, and we’re hoping to take in the sites. Probably go see the Grand Canyon and maybe Sedona,” said Swanson.

Many folks fly into the Valley to be home for the holidays.

“We’re happy to be home to see family for Christmas and just be together at our house for Christmas,” said Christa Nielson from Chandler.

TSA estimates about 40 million people will be screened from Dec. 19 through Jan. 2.
