PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Consumer confidence in the United States took a slight hit in June, according to a recent study focused on household finances and inflation. Many families are still feeling the pinch, and one of the most common places it hits them is at the grocery store.

That’s why Gibby Parra and Arizona’s Family Surprise Squad, armed with a handful of $200 gift cards, went to Fry’s Mercado at 43rd Avenue and McDowell Road to surprise some lucky shoppers.

He first approached a man in a motorized chair in the produce department. The gentleman had some questions when Gibby handed him the card out of the blue, but was surprised and pleased when Gibby explained that it was all his to use as he wanted courtesy of the Valley Toyota Dealers.

As Gibby moved on, he found a woman in one aisle wearing fishnet gloves and a fluorescent pink T-shirt. He told her she looked like Madonna, and she said it was 80s Day at her work. She said her favorite Madonna song was ‘Like a Prayer,’ and Gibby joked that with the gift card, she could buy a Madonna CD or download some of the Material Girl’s songs.

In a different aisle, Gibby approached a woman shopping for her kids. The two of them agreed that children seem to eat more when they’re stuck inside during the summer. “Buy them ice cream, buy them candy,” Gibby said as he handed her the gift card. Better yet, you got them enough stuff, buy yourself something,” he said.

The next lucky gift card recipient was a woman about to enter the self-checkout line. She recognized Gibby and said she was a big fan. Her cart was filled with things like soda and chips. She told Gibby she was buying the items to take to her work.

With a final gift card remaining, Gibby stopped a man who was also about to checkout. He said he was buying chicken and chips. He asked what was the catch when Gibby handed him the gift card. “Know that the Arizona’s Surprise Squad is here to help you out. You can spend this however you like.”
