PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Although gas prices overall are coming down in recent weeks, it still puts a dent in people’s pocketbooks to fill up their tanks. The average price for a gallon of gas in Arizona is $4.03 and in the Phoenix-area it’s $4.18.

It’s why Ian Schwartz and the Arizona’s Family Surprise Squad team went to the Fry’s Fuel Center at 67th Avenue and Indian School to give away free gas to some lucky drivers.

The first person Ian approached was a man who was filling up a number of large portable plastic fuel tanks. He told Ian he has a contract with the postal service and delivers mail to more rural areas of the state like Casa Grande and Eloy.

“We want to help you get those letters to those people,” Ian said. “So courtesy of Valley Toyota Dealers we’re going to help you fill all of those up.”

Ian next found a man named Richard at a pump. Richard said he was retired and enjoys camping but hadn’t much of a chance to enjoy the great outdoors. Ian said he wanted to help him get out by paying for his gas.

A woman driving a Toyota was the next person Ian surprised. She was a little shocked when he first told her he was paying for her gas but she happily accepted his offer.

Even after the televised segment was over the surprises kept coming. A man pulled up shortly after Ian wrapped but the crew told him they would pay for his gas. He was visibly moved and thanked everyone, saying that he just had a baby born on Valentine’s Day so his budget is tighter than ever.

The crew had an extra gift card worth $200 so they handed it to him and told him to use it on his child. He shook everyone’s hands, touched by the generosity of the Arizona’s Family Surprise Squad.
