PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — Norine Richardson is a former attorney, retired judge, community activist, and Arizona Cheetahs Track Club founder. Its motto is “live life with power, passion, and purpose.”

She’s influenced countless of children and young adults over the decades and still stays in touch with many of them. That includes Keasha, a woman who wanted to show her thanks for everything Norine has done by asking the Surprise Squad to celebrate her mentor.

“She’s been amazing. In my sense of community, a part of that stems from her,” Keasha told Arizona’s Family’s Tess Rafols at a Chandler park. “She would talk about the importance of education, the importance of learning.”

Tess asked Keasha to say three words that best describe Norine. Keasha replied with ‘resilient,’ ‘loving,’ and ‘mom of moms.’ She added that having Norine while growing up was like having a bonus mom in her world.

Keasha said that Norine thought Keasha was coming over to say hi and drop off something. Norine had no idea Tess and the Surprise Squad crew would accompany her. They knocked on her door, and a stunned Norine answered it while cradling her newborn grandson. After the initial shock wore off, Norine sat down with Tess to discuss why she does what she does.

“It’s a family. We have goalsetting, we check grades. We try to mentor.” Norine stressed that it’s important to believe in children for them to believe they can do anything they want if they put their mind to it.

Tess handed Norine an envelope and asked her to open it. “Our sponsor, Valley Toyota Dealers wants to give you this to help you continue your dream of making an impact in our community. Five thousand dollars is for however you would like to spend it.”

Norine’s emotions weren’t over. Tess next asked Keasha to read the letter she wrote to Arizona’s Family nominating her lifelong friend.

“Her unwavering dedication and exceptional contributions to the community make her a deserving candidate for this special recognition. Norine established Arizona Cheetahs Track Club with the vision to empower and inspire young athletes through track and field. The club has become a beacon of positivity and growth, providing a nurturing environment for children and teenagers.”

“You are so sweet,” Norine said as she looked at Keasha with adoring eyes.
