PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — While official inflation numbers are cooling, paying for groceries is still challenging for many people.  The USDA says Americans are still spending more than 11% of their income on food.  That’s why Ian Schwartz and the Arizona’s Family Surprise Squad went to a Fry’s Food Store in west Phoenix Tuesday morning to help some lucky individuals out.

Ian first approached a woman named Maria, who was at the self-checkout aisle.  She said her groceries totaled up to about $95 and added that it’s been hard trying to stretch her dollars for her and her grandchildren.

“Can we help you stretch that dollar?” Ian asked as he handed her a gift card worth $250 courtesy of Valley Toyota Dealers, who sponsor the Arizona’s Family Surprise Squad. Maria smiled and said it would help a lot.

Ian then approached a man named Phillip, shopping in the frozen food aisle and asked him what’s for dinner. Phillip laughed and said he didn’t know yet. Ian handed him a gift card and told him that it would help with his shopping.

After that, Ian approached a couple named Candice and David in the meat department. They said it’s been getting tougher to pay for their groceries.

“How about $250? Will that make a difference?” Ian asked.

“It would really help,” Candice answered with a smile.

Ian moved on to a woman pushing a cart with a small child inside it. She thanked Ian after he gave her a gift card and moved on with her shopping. Later, when the camera was off, and the segment was finished, she got more emotional and said something like this had never happened to her before, and it would greatly help her and her child.

Ian wrapped up the event by stopping a man pushing his cart down an aisle.  The man smiled broadly when Ian handed him the last gift card and said it would help him out.

“It’s that easy folks,” Ian said with a smile. “Your Valley Toyota Dealers and Arizona’s Family try to make that trip to the grocery store just a tad easier.”
