Surprise Squad gives away gift cards at Fry’s grocery store in Tempe
TEMPE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -- Gibby Para and the Arizona’s Family Surprise Squad showed up at the Fry’s Food Store near Rural Road and Southern to give away $200 gift cards to unsuspecting shoppers. When Gibby first arrived he was approached by a woman named Angela who said she and her mother watch him almost every morning.
Angela then got emotional as she shared with Gibby that things have been tough for her over the recent years. Her dad died from cancer five years ago and she’s also battled the disease as well.
“I’m here with the Surprise Squad this morning,” he told her, “and thanks to our Valley Toyota Dealers, I want to give you $200.” He then looked straight at the camera and told Angela’s mom that if she’s watching, her daughter was coming home with some extra cash.
He then moved over to a man with a cart in the self-checkout lane. He said credit card bills from the holidays were arriving and like so many others it could be hard to make ends meet. When Gibby gave him the gift card, he smiled broadly and said it would most definitely help him out.
Gibby next stopped a couple shopping together. Both were smiling and their smiles grew even broader when he stopped them and gave them their gift card.
A young man in a fluorescent green hoodie was the next person stopped by Gibby. He said he was shopping for his groceries and the money would help him out. As Gibby started to wrap things up, he returned to the self-checkout line where a woman was at the register. He gave her the final gift card of the day and she told him she had never been given that much money in her life before.
