Mother credits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for extra time with son after terminal diagnosis
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — At just 9 years old, Juan was diagnosed with cancer and given only six months to live.
His mother Amelia found St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., where a team of doctors gave them hope.
The St. Jude doctors treated Juan and allowed him to spend the next few years in and out of treatment. Sadly, the cancer returned, and Juan passed away at 15 years old.
But Amelia said it it wasn’t for St. Jude, she wouldn’t have had those extra years with her son.
“They gave me my son back,” she said. “It was after that second surgery that he just came back, and it was like it was Juan again. I don’t know if that makes sense, like it was him. He was joking around. You know, like, all he wanted to do was eat.”
Arizona’s Family will bring your more of Juan’s story in the coming weeks.
