Take a trip down south to Tucson for a charming weekend getaway
Field Trip Friday is sponsored by Sanderson Ford
TUCSON, AZ (AZFamily) — Tag along with the Good Morning Arizona team and take a trip down south! In this Field Trip Friday, we will be taking you to our sister city in the south — Tucson, Arizona.
Tucson is the state’s second largest city filled with award-winning restaurants, vibrant culture and sports scene and a wonderful road trip destination! It’s also home to gorgeous murals spread throughout the city.
Who will take home the cup?
A historic rivalry has been brewing in the Wild, Wild West for years — and now it’s time to head south! Tucson will be home to the Territorial Cup this year — the historic rival football game between ASU and U of A that alternates home field advantage every year. This year is the 125th anniversary of the “Duel in the Desert” and marks the first time the schools will be competing for the coveted cup in the Big 12 conference.
U of A is looking for its third win in a row, while Arizona State is looking to break the losing streak. The game will be held on Saturday, November 30.
Time for a foodie tour!
Did you know Tucson is home to some of the best, award-winning restaurants in the state? We’re taking you on a tasty tour to sample some of the best foods Tucson has to offer, including local favorites!
Our first stop is one Tucson residents will know all too well — El Guero Canelo! The restaurant is known for their mouthwatering Sonoran-style hot dogs, but you also can try their delicious burritos, tacos, quesadillas, tortas and more!
Our next stop takes us to Boca, a must-have because Chef Maria is a James Beard semifinalist! Tucson native Maria Mazon creates one-of-a kind gourmet tacos. Try the asada, al pastor or mole de pollo, just to name a few.
If it’s dinner time and if you’re in Tucson, head over to Tumerico. The restaurant was ranked #1 on Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat in 2024! The restaurant has had celebrities come through its door, including singer Kelly Clarkson and food guru Guy Fieri. The restaurant specializes in fresh Latin vegan-vegetarian food.
If you’re looking for some coffee, visit Cafe Passé on historic 4th Avenue! Owned by Tucson native Jenny Rice, the cafe features an old school charm with a laid back vibe.
Ride On!
Bikers from all around the country are heading down south for the 41st Annual El Tour de Tucson! Over 9,000 cyclists will bike the streets of Tucson this weekend. All rides and routes will start and finish at the Tucson Convention Center and the surrounding area.
Historic (and haunted?) Hotel
Stay a night at downtown Tucson’s most unique hotel! The historic Hotel Congress was built in 1918 and houses a restaurant, bar and music venue.
But, did you know the hotel is also rumored to be haunted? Guests can dare to spend the night in one of the four “haunted” rooms. The woman in the white dress haunts room 242, while the Victorian gentleman roams inside room 214.
Hit the Trails
Did you know Tucson is home to some beautiful hiking trails? Avid outdoor enthusiasts can head down south to hike five mountain ranges that surround the city. Saguaro National Park offers popular hikes, or travel to Oro Valley and visit Catalina State Park.
Don’t forget to visit Mount Lemmon, the highest point in the Santa Catalina Mountains, which becomes a winter wonderland!
Unique Hangout Spot
The Boxyard is Tucson’s best patio, bar and eatery, located directly on 4th Avenue. The Boxyard is comprised of 10 brightly colored shipping containers which house four local food entrepreneurs, two full bars, and indoor/outdoor seating to provide epic views and countless vantage points. Its illuminated courtyard offers expansive open-air seating so patrons can enjoy the beautiful outdoors anytime of the day and all year long.
Meet Arizona’s Family sister station!
Did you know Arizona’s Family has a sister station just a few hours from the Valley? KOLD News 13 serves Tucson residents as both stations work together to cover Arizona news.
Good Morning Arizona caught up with KOLD reporter Tolulope Ajayi.
