Call recordings, police interview shown in day 5 of Lori Vallow Daybell trial
Testimony on Monday focused on physical evidence and possible motive
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — On the fifth day of the Lori Vallow Daybell trial, prosecutors tried to establish a motive for Charles’ death and presented more physical evidence that this was not a self defense shooting.
On Monday, Medical examiner Dr. Derek Bumgarner testified and confirmed that the shooter was likely standing up shooting at Charles on the floor for the second shot. He also stated Charles Vallow didn’t die immediately and could have survived for a couple of minutes, a key detail based on the CPR discrepancy and the fact that Lori and Alex didn’t call 911 for 47 minutes.
One of the questions prosecutors tried to answer on the fifth day of the trial was also why Lori Vallow Daybell wanted her fourth husband, Charles Vallow, dead.
When Charles died, Lori thought she was in line for a $1 million life insurance payout, not knowing the beneficiary had been changed months prior. The jury heard the audio recordings from of Lori’s calls to collect the life insurance money and a second call when she was told she wasn’t the beneficiary and had been changed in March 2019.
Lori, JJ, and Tylee were entitled to a total of $5,700 per month from Social Security after Charles died.
Last on the stand was Chandler Police Det. Cassandra Ynclan. She transported Lori and Tylee to the police station and did the interrogation interview with them as witnesses to the crime. She described both Lori and Tylee as nonchalant and said it was stunning how Lori acted.
Lori tried to dig in on the cross-examination, asking if the detective believed Tylee or thought she was genuine, but that got shut down quickly by the state and the judge for hearsay.
Lori is expected to continue her cross-examination of Ynclan on Tuesday.
