PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Newly obtained court documents are revealing a possible motive behind what prompted a man to allegedly stab his girlfriend’s father to death before hiding in a woman’s bathroom at a nearby Phoenix park.

Last Friday morning, Phoenix police were called to the neighborhood near 32nd Street and Campo Bello Drive, just north of Bell Road, after a woman reported their father had been injured inside a home. When officers arrived, they found the victim, identified as Jack Olsen, 73, dead from several stab wounds.

The woman told officers she saw her boyfriend, identified as Daniel Kohls, 38, stab her dad until the knife broke. Kohls reportedly walked into the kitchen and pulled out a second knife while telling her that he needed to “finish” off Olsen, and then stabbed him several more times. Detectives at the home recovered a large knife with blood and another knife with a broken handle.

Kohls then reportedly showered and ran from the home, leaving his bloody watch behind, court paperwork said. Officers later found Kohls hiding in the woman’s bathroom at a nearby park, where he was taken into custody. He was found with several cuts to his hands and had reportedly said it could have happened during the incident, but also possibly at work.

During an interview with police, Kohls reportedly admitted that he was upset at Olsen because of “the way he treated his girlfriend.” He told detectives that he planned to break Olsen’s neck but had been unsuccessful, so he pulled a knife and stabbed the victim. He also reportedly admitted to cleaning up in the bathroom before leaving the scene.

Kohls was booked into the Maricopa County jail on a $500,000 cash-only bond. He faces a single charge of first-degree murder.
