Statewide DUI Taskforce patrolling for impaired drivers during Cinco De Mayo weekend
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Officers, deputies and troopers from 50 different law enforcement agencies across Arizona will be on the lookout for impaired drivers throughout Cinco De Mayo weekend.
The DUI taskforce will be patrolling highways and streets to respond to any under-the-influence driving and get impaired drivers off the road before anyone gets hurt.
Sponsored by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Director Jesse Torrez is urging people to be smart and have a plan throughout the holiday weekend.
“Any impaired driving enforcement is crucial. We have a significant number of DUIs and impaired drivers,” Torrez said. “Be safe and have a plan. It is not worth getting arrested, in an accident or hurting somebody or possibly killing or hurting yourself.”
Last year during Cinco De Mayo weekend, the DUI taskforce made 323 DUI arrests statewide.
“This year, our DRE program is number three in the nation,” Torrez said. “There are many alternatives now that are very cost-effective, rather than first-time DUI in Arizona or metropolitan Phoenix-area without injury. The fines and surcharges average about $3,700.”
If you plan on drinking during the holiday weekend, Torrez is urging to have a plan, set a designated driver or use one of several rideshare apps.
The statewide DUI taskforce will patrol from Saturday, May 3, to Monday, May 5.
