Tempe preparing heat safety ordinance to protect city workers
TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily)— The City of Tempe is drafting an ordinance to improve protections for city workers and city-contracted workers who work in the heat.
The proposed ordinance calls for requirements ranging from written heat safety plans to access to water and shade, rest breaks, bilingual signage and whistleblower protections.
The ideas come from a subcommittee at the Tempe City Council; the council has since asked for input on the ordinance.
“Heat illnesses and heat deaths are preventable,” said Alana Billingsley, who lives in Tempe and supports the ordinance.
So far, the council has yet to adopt the ordinance.
