3-year-old dies days after allegedly being shot by her dad in Surprise
SURPRISE, AZ (AZFamily) — Police say a 3-year-old girl has died days after her father reportedly shot her at a Surprise home.
Police now say they are working with prosecutors to amend the criminal charges against Dariusz Modrzejewski, 48, to include homicide.
Authorities say that officers responded to the area of 184th Drive and Bell Road, west of the Loop 303 freeway, around 6:30 p.m. last Thursday. When they arrived alongside crisis negotiators and SWAT crews, they heard a gunshot, prompting crews to rush in and find the toddler, who was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
During Modrzejewski’s initial court appearance on Friday, prosecutors noted that the girl had been shot in the head. Prosecutors also believed he was a flight risk as he carried dual citizenship to Poland.
Modrzejewski was initially booked on several aggravated assault charges, including the use of a deadly weapon and assaulting a child under the age of 15. As of Monday afternoon, he is being held on a $1 million bond.
